If you are searching for how to start a laser engraving business, this checklist is for you. It will not teach you marketing or pricing. It covers the equipment side: choosing a fibre laser marking machine, deciding whether you need a machine laser cutting setup, and avoiding the expensive mistakes I made.
I have spent the last seven years running a small laser job shop. I have personally made and documented nine significant mistakes, totaling roughly $17,000 in wasted budget. Some came from bad quotes, some from bad assumptions, and two from simply not asking the right questions.
Now I maintain the checklist we use for every new machine we evaluate. We have caught 47 potential errors using it in the past 18 months. Here is the short version. I'll go through each step below.

Step 1: Define Your Materials and Jobs Before Choosing Power
Laser engraving is not one thing. A serial number on stainless steel is not the same as engraving a cutting board. If you plan to mark metal, a fibre laser marking machine is usually the right tool. If you plan to cut wood or acrylic, a CO2 laser is a better fit. If you plan to cut metal, you need a machine laser cutting setup with much more power and a rigid frame.
In my first year, 2017, I bought a high-power fiber laser because I assumed bigger was better. It marked steel beautifully. But most of my work was acrylic signage. For the first six months, that expensive laser sat idle while I paid a local shop to cut acrylic. The machine was right, but the business plan was wrong.
When I compared a fiber laser and a CO2 laser side by side, I finally understood why material dictates machine choice. The fiber laser burned wood and left ghost marks on acrylic. The CO2 laser cut both easily but could not mark stainless steel. There is no one universal laser. There is only the right laser for your actual work.
Step 2: Research the Laser Source and the Company Behind It

The IPG Photonics products you will encounter range from compact pulsed lasers for marking to high-power cutting and welding lasers.
When a machine spec sheet says the laser source is from IPG Photonics, that is a positive signal. It means an established company built the part that generates the beam. But the source is one part of the machine. The frame, gantry, motors, controller, software, and support determine whether that source actually delivers good results. I have seen a well-built machine with a lower-cost source outperform a poorly assembled machine with a premium source. The laser source is like a good engine in a car with bad suspension. It might have power, but the ride will still be rough.
IPG Photonics products include lasers for marking, cutting, welding, and cleaning. That gives you a sense of their product range. But the right product for your engraving business depends on your material list from Step 1.
Step 3: Ask What is NOT Included Before You Ask the Price
Here is the lesson that changed everything for me. In September 2019, I received a quote for a 'complete' fibre laser marking machine. The price was excellent. I signed the order. When the machine arrived, I discovered the quote did not include the air compressor, the fume extractor, or the chiller. The laser would overheat without the chiller. The marking area would fill with fumes without an extractor. Three parts, $2,450 extra, and a ten-day delay.
The vendor did not break any rules. The word 'complete' just meant the machine and the controller. The accessories were separate. My mistake was not asking the obvious question: what is NOT included?
Now I have a policy. Before I ask for a price, I ask for a list of every component needed to operate the machine daily. Air compressor? Chiller? Exhaust duct? Fume extraction? Training? Installation? Tooling? Shipping crate? Ask about all of them.
I also pay close attention to price transparency. In my opinion, a supplier who answers that question clearly is more likely to be honest about support and lead times.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront - even if the total looks higher - usually costs less in the end.
Step 4: Get Custom Samples on Your Materials
I did not fully understand the value of material testing until a $3,000 order came back completely wrong. The vendor's demo sample looked perfect on their steel. My production part was a coated metal tag. The same settings produced a faint, ghostly mark. If I had sent them my material first, I would have seen the problem before paying the deposit.
Any supplier who believes in their machine will accept your test file and your material. Send them stainless steel, aluminum, brass, anodized aluminum, plastic, plated steel, and anything else you plan to process. Ask for the settings that worked: power, speed, frequency, and number of passes. Then run the same test on the machine they are quoting.
This step will eliminate most of the wrong machines on your shortlist.
Step 5: Calculate the Real Operating Cost of a Machine Laser Cutting Setup
If you need metal cutting, a fiber laser cutting machine can be a fantastic investment. But the purchase price is only the starting point. A machine laser cutting setup uses assist gas, nozzles, consumable lenses, and a powerful exhaust. It draws more electricity. It may require a water chiller. Spare parts for a 1.5 kW cutting system cost more than parts for a 20 W marking head.
My mistake: I priced a combination machine based on the machine cost alone. I forgot to include the $230 monthly cost for gas and consumables. The purchase fit my budget. The operating cost did not.
If you are going to cut for fewer than 10 hours a week, consider renting a laser cutting service until your order volume justifies the machine. You will pay more per part, but you will not bleed cash while a machine sits idle.
Step 6: Plan for Service and Spare Parts Before You Need Them
The vendor failure in March 2023 changed how I think about backup planning. One critical deadline missed, and suddenly redundancy did not seem like overkill. Our machine went down for 12 days because a controller board was not in stock. It was under warranty, but 'under warranty' does not mean 'under production.'
The most frustrating part of downtime is that the same issue can keep recurring. You would think a signed service contract would guarantee a response time. But a response time is just a promise. After the third delay, I was ready to replace the entire system. What finally helped was asking the service side hard questions before ordering the machine.
Ask the supplier where the service techs are located, how long parts typically take, and whether they stock common spares. Ask about the laser source manufacturer's service route. If the source is from IPG Photonics, check if they have local representation in your area. IPG Photonics HQ is in Massachusetts, but if you are in Europe or Asia, the local distributor is your real service point.
Keep spares for the parts that fail often. A spare F-theta lens, a protective window, and a set of cables can save you a week of downtime.
Step 7: Do the Safety and Facility Checklist Before Delivery
Ventilation and electrical requirements are easy to ignore until the machine arrives. That is a mistake. A laser needs clean power, an exhaust path, and enough floor clearance for maintenance. My first machine was delivered to a room that was too small. Moving it twice wasted $1,100 and two weekends.
Laser safety is not optional. A Class 4 laser can cause permanent eye damage from reflected beams. You need an enclosed system or laser safety eyewear rated for the laser's wavelength. For a fiber laser at 1064 nm, standard cheap laser glasses are not enough. Ask the supplier for the required optical density.
Also check the electrical outlet. Many marking machines can run on 120V, but cutting machines often need 220V or three-phase power. Figure this out before the delivery truck arrives.
Warning Signs I Now Watch For
Even with a checklist, suppliers and buyers still skip steps. If you see these signs, slow down:
- A supplier who will not run samples on your materials.
- A quote with vague items like 'accessory package' or 'installation support' without details.
- No one can tell you the exact model and warranty terms of the laser source.
- Service support is described only as 'online support' and nothing else.
- You are asked to pay a large deposit before any technical questions are answered.
Bottom Line
Figuring out how to start a laser engraving business is not just about picking a brand. It is about matching the machine to the work, understanding the total cost, and proving the machine can handle your materials before you sign.
IPG Photonics makes excellent fiber lasers, and IPG Photonics HQ in Oxford, Massachusetts is a sign of a large, established company. But your business will succeed or fail based on the parts that are easy to ignore: hidden accessories, operating costs, support, and safety.
